This haiku takes place during Misogi, a Shinto ceremony. On Misogi, which occurs every June 30th, it is customary to bathe in a river to cleanse yourself of your sins. On the old calendar, Misogi falls at the end of summer, when there is a slight breeze and everything is finally cooling down. Basho evokes such a relaxing summer scene with this haiku.
