Basho wrote this haiku in 1688. Seta, in the Shinshu region, was famous for its fireflies (hotaru). Basho seemed to love the fireflies of Seta, and wrote two other haiku poems about them as well. This haiku is likely about "Genji Hotaru," a variety of firefly so large that in Basho's time, it was said that you could even read by the light of them. Basho's haiku makes us feel the magic of being surrounded by thousands of moons (tsuki) and fireflies.
