Basho presented this haiku to his friend in the spring of 1692. The friend was living in the mountains of Kanazawa, far away from the hustle and bustle of Edo. Yamazakura, or mountain cherry tree, is a metaphor for his friend, living in peace. Basho seemed to be weary of his city life and the various problems he had at that time.
