The literal translation of kogarashi is "wind that kills trees". It means strong cold winter wind. In this haiku, a bamboo forest swallows up the wind creating a vivid balance between movement and stillness. Basho originally intended for this to be a gazanku (a haiku written specifically to be put together with a drawing).
